[ He probably has no idea what that means, but she doesn't elaborate. He'll figure it out one way or the other. ]

I was trying to do what? [ A part of him wants an explanation because he hates not being knowledgeable of something, but they don't need to keep talking about Mayuzumi and Emerald's dating life (or lack thereof). ] Never you mind. It was a misunderstanding on my end, and I know better now.

If you don't want to close track of either Chihiro or Tetsuya, you should never stop looking them in the eye.

Grabbing them works pretty well too.

[ She can't do that in basketball or anything, but outside of the court she doesn't particularly care. Emerald doesn't shy away from touching others as long as it's clear what they're doing and why or she's the one who initiated it. She gestures to her head with her free hand. ]

When I use my semblance, I have to be able to imagine everything from another person's point of view and account for everything around what I'm changing or it becomes obvious it's not real. So if I'm trying to pay attention to them, I've got enough practice paying attention to my environment that it's not hard if my focus isn't split. I'm not good at multitasking, so grabbing Chihiro is way easier.

Semblance... is that what it's called? [ He waves his free hand, drawing an invisible circle with his wrist. ] The illusions.

Yeah. Semblances are abilities born from a person's soul, so they're mostly unique. They're supposed to be... they come from who you are as a person, deep down.

[ She's not sure what that says about her. It isn't as if her abilities manifested after she met Cinder, she could already do this. Someone who can literally manipulate the minds of others can't be a good person. ]

If it's born from a person's soul, then is it determined upon birth?

[ He can't imagine a specific semblance being forced on someone... Sometimes, he thinks about how he would be able to play without his Emperor Eye, but he never truly had any need for it until he had the unhealthy need to keep people under his thumb. He wonders now if he would have been able to awaken a different ability then. ]

I guess? I don't really know. It's not like I had schooling, I learned to fight trial-by-fire style. [ Her voice gets a little quiet, distant, but she keeps talking. ] Cinder's the only one who taught me anything I didn't have to learn on my own.

By your definition, a Semblance has nothing to do with a person's character.

If anything, you mould your Semblance to fit who you are of who you will become.

Well I can't change it and whether it is or not. It's who I am now.

What other examples of Semblance are there?

Rapid speed, polarity, self-replication, counter-damage, inability to feel pain, nullification, hard-light weapon copying, absorption and release of of electrical energy as strength.. if you can think of it, it's probably something that someone can do. I can go on.

Humanity almost went extinct, we found a way to not die. Most of the time. A lot of people still die all the time in horrible ways, but the only way to make it not a certainty is to learn how to fight or cozy up to someone who can and hope they don't misstep.

What's the reason for danger?

[ It can't possibly be because of Cinder and whatever the hell she's doing... ]

There are creatures called Grimm. They're black, with white bone armor and red markings. They come in all varieties-- sea monsters, birds, mammoths, spiders, the stuff of nightmares you might read about in horror stories from other worlds. Some of them attack physically others have more... disturbing abilities. The entire world is full of them, but that's not the real kicker. The Grimm can sense and are attracted to negative emotions. So instead of kicking you while you're down, the gods decided it was going to load the planet up with murderous soulless monsters to mutilate and kill you and everything alive near you that can sense when you're down.

[ And that's without even getting into the more disturbing abilities, like a spider that can suck out and transfer part of your soul or a peeping tom jellyfish or the Apathy but Em doesn't know about those I guess. ]

[ He wants to ask why Emerald and Cinder do the things they do if there are already monsters who roam about and threaten people, then. Shouldn't the people of Remnant be united in eradicating threats? What are they fighting for? ]

It's fortunate creatures like those do not exist here, then.

[ She nods. Emerald's just going to play with his fingers while they talk because.. well, she's holding his hand anyway and it's something to do to help her keep focusing on the conversation. ]

It's nice. I like a lot of things like that here.

[ His gaze falls to where their fingers are. He wonders if he should say something about it, but decides against it in the end. If she's comfortable, then it's fine. ]

This place doesn't need more strange creatures. We have the Arehtei, as well as those monsters that show up every month or so.

You should come with, next time there's something good on the task board.

[ Speaking of monsters. She'll make sure he's fine if he does come, but she wants to get him used to being in more dangerous situations so that he can both see that she'll protect him and maybe he'll pick up a thing or two watching her defend herself. She's worried he won't call her if he needs help still, and she realizes that if she loses Akashi and Mercury, she isn't going to know what to do. ]

That may not be a wise decision.

[ He knows Emerald has her back, but he doesn't want to let her do all the work while he just stands there and does nothing. Picking up a weapon doesn't seem to be in his interests anymore. ]

Why not? It's not all fighting, you know. I've done infiltration before, those whole thing that was basically puzzles and platforming... It'd be a lot easier to do stuff like that with someone way smarter with me. And more fun.

My friends were very worried after what happened at Shaarnath. [ Now, he doubts that it'll happen again, but he really doesn't want to put himself in any danger. He's been trying to be better about everything—about taking advice and trusting his peers—and he seems to believe that this is one way of going about it. ]

Secondly, I do not intend for you to do most of the work. While puzzles may be my forte, there may be traps involved, amongst other things. In a dangerous situation, I should turn to you, but that would only make me a burden.

[ If they were to team up, he'd want each of them to do 50% of the work each. ]

If you'd like to do a task together, we can choose amongst the less dangerous ones.

That's because you went in without a plan or expectation for emergencies in Shaarnath, right?

[ Okay, she's settled on that instead of continually pointing out that he would've been fine in Shaarnath if he had just taken a knee for two seconds. ]

How about something medium? Not just straight-up monster hunting, but something that isn't risk-free like babysitting rat-dogs.

[ He is going to pointedly ignore the question. It doesn't sound like Emerald is expecting a proper answer to him, anyway. ]

We'll see what is on the task board in the next coming weeks.

[ Emerald quiets down after that, and stops playing with his fingers too. ]
